Workshop to Focus on Employment and At-Risk Youth

The Center of Workforce Innovations will be conducting a workshop on Friday, October 16th, entitled The Radar Approach to Job Retention for At-Risk Youth. The workshop is geared towards those employment staff and managers who work specifically with at-risk youth.

Workshop highlights include: identifying the hidden reasons for job loss and why bosses fire youth; helping youth avoid job loss; exceed retention goals and learn about reducing high retention risk points by being proactive; and free retention skills building handouts and tools to take home. Attendees will gain a better understanding of why retention should be treated as both a pre- and post-employment service.

Leading the workshop is national trainer Larry Robbin, who has trained over 100,000 people in workshops, and has designed more than 50 youth employment programs serving all types of at-risk youth. His program designs have received national recognition for outstanding retention results. The Department of Labor, nonprofits, youth corrections programs, and training providers, have used his services to improve job retention in youth employment programs. His unique approach to retention with its emphasis on transforming all pre and post employment services into a powerful job loss prevention helps youth stay on the job longer.

Calumet College of St. Joseph Open New Student and Community Center

Calumet College of St. Joseph will formally open its new Student Activity/Community Center on September 17.

It is the first new building in the history of the Whiting, IN-based institution. Established in 1951 by the Missionaries of the Precious Blood, the college offered the Calumet region’s first bachelor degree program, and originally educated the sons and daughters of millworkers in church basements and empty storefronts.

In 1973, Amoco donated the building that currently serves as the college’s six-story “vertical campus.” In 1999, the College added an athletic program. Ten years later, the new center finally gives Crimson Wave athletes a home.

The $3.5 million, 25,000-square-foot facility includes a new gymnasium, weight room, locker rooms, offices and a conference room. The building was designed by Daniel Szany of Carras, Szany-Kuhn and Associates Architects. The general contractor was Larry Behling, President of Gil Behling & Son, Inc.
