Credit Union Donates $1,000 to LaPorte Red Cross

On August 27, 2009, Members Advantage Credit Union donated a check for $1,000 to the American Red Cross, LaPorte County Chapter. Dennis Fischer, Chairman of the Board presented the check on behalf of the Credit Union.

He stated “During these difficult economic times, it’s a great privilege to be able to make a contribution to assist those in need right here in our own community.” Bobbi Petru, Executive Director of the American Red Cross, LaPorte County Chapter who was there to receive the donation affirmed that the funds remain in LaPorte County.

She stated “We are extremely thankful to Members Advantage for this donation to our chapter. This will help us provide support to families who require assistance when their home has been destroyed by fire.” The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families.

Members Advantage Credit Union is a locally managed, non-profit, full-service financial institution. Open to anyone who lives or works in LaPorte, Porter or Lake County, Members Advantage has two branch locations in Michigan City and one in Crown Point.

PUC Enrollment Surpasses 10,000 Mark

A record number of students are attending Purdue University Calumet this fall.

Enrollment of 10,133 tops the previous high mark of 9,607 students in 2007. This year’s total also represents a 9 percent increase over last year’s count of 9,325.

“Surpassing 10,000 students is an important milestone for Purdue Calumet,” Purdue Calumet Chancellor Howard Cohen said. “We are committed to providing a high quality education for students who, for a variety of reasons, must remain in Northwest Indiana to pursue their education. Our growth in graduate enrollments and international students are strong indicators that our quality is appreciated beyond our regional boundaries.”

Purdue Calumet’s enrollment includes substantial increases among graduate students (1,128 total, up 16 percent/156 students) and international students (557 total, up 22 percent/100 students). Also included in the total are 315 dual credit, Crown Point High School students, who are enrolled in specific Purdue Calumet classes for high school and university credit.

Among other enrollment data:

  • Students of color total 3,349, up 310 from last year.
  • There are 8,516 in-state students, compared to 7,875 last year.
  • Full time students, comprising 61 percent of total enrollment, total 6,151, up 415.
  • There are 1,298 students enrolled at Purdue Calumet’s Academic Learning Center in Merrillville, up 229 from a year ago. Some Indiana University Northwest students also take classes there.

Additionally, Purdue Calumet’s University Village I and II apartment complex is at nearly 80 percent capacity with 590 residential students. The newly-constructed, 369-student University Village II opened this fall.

Undergraduate academic programs reporting the largest enrollment increases are engineering, electrical engineering technology, accounting, nursing, mechanical engineering technology, construction management & engineering technologies, and biology-pre-medicine.

Davis Joins Best Western Staff

Brian Davis has joined the staff of the Best Western La Porte Hotel and Conference Center as Food and Beverage Director.

Brian brings to his new role more than 20 year of experience in the food and beverage industry, including nine years in account management for the Coca-Cola Company, and management of a fine dining restaurant near Denver. In addition, many in the area know Brian from his time at the Heston Supper Club. In addition to the daily operation and management of the hotel’s two onsite restaurants, The Timbers (fine dining) and Rother’s Pub (casual dining), Brian’s responsibilities include overseeing all banquet and catering functions.

Gerry Roth, owner, is very pleased to have Davis on board and commented, “Brian brings a depth of experience to our management team and we feel fortunate to have him. We are committed to providing every guest with an outstanding dining experience and Brian shares our passion for quality food and customer service.”

Brian was born and raised in La Porte and makes his home there with and his wife, Camille, and their two children, Cameron (9) and Olivia (5).
