Highway and Bridge Stimulus Cash Flows

The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) said today it has fully advertised or awarded all $658 million of Indiana’s highway and bridge allocation under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. The Recovery Act has funded 1,082 transportation projects spread across all 92 counties, with 62 percent of the funds invested in economically distressed counties.

“While the full impact of the Recovery Act has not yet been seen, Indiana’s state and local transportation agencies led the nation in awarding more shovel-ready projects than any other state,” said INDOT Commissioner Michael W. Reed. “A large number of smaller-sized projects maximized the potential for Indiana contractors to bid and compete for Stimulus work.”

Indiana’s Recovery Act funding stretched much further than anticipated as a result of contractor bids coming in 15 to 20 percent below engineers’ estimates. In addition to geographic distribution around the state, all 1,082 projects were spread across a variety of categories.

Texas, Indiana Top Wind Power Growth in 2009

For the second year in a row, Indiana has ranked at or near the top of a national survey tracking the installation of large scale wind developments in the United States in 2009. In the last two years, Indiana has gone from 50th to 13th among wind-producing states.

According to the American Wind Energy Association (AWEA), Indiana installed 905 Megawatts (MW) of wind power in 2009. That puts Indiana second only to Texas for the year. In 2008, Indiana was singled out by AWEA as having the fastest wind power growth in the U.S.

“The business-friendly environment we’ve created is leading to success for more renewable energy installations in Indiana,” said Lt. Governor Becky Skillman, who oversees the Office of Energy Development (OED). “Low costs, low regulation, and local government sophistication regarding wind power issues has kept development levels increasing.”
