Sanlo Reverses Course, Will Stay in Michigan City

Sanlo Manufacturing, which said in April 2009 that it would shutter its Michigan City facility, has reversed its decision and will now keep the plant, and its 70 jobs, in operation.

The company worked with the Michigan City Economic Development Corporation (MCEDC), the city, the Northwest Indiana Workforce Board and the Center of Workforce Innovations to develop a feasible business plan for the Michigan City plant.

“We are pleased with the support and assistance provided by Michigan City and the Center of Workforce Innovations in securing the training and infrastructure grants for the local Sanlo operation. The funds will allow us to improve the facility and provide additional training for the workforce now that Sanlo will be staying in Michigan City. Notes: Bill Aims to Boost Lending to Small Businesses

Pending federal legislation would enable community banks to tap into a $30 billion fund to increase lending to small businesses.

Democrats in Congress said the banks should be able to use the money to leverage up to $300 billion in loans to small businesses, helping to loosen tight credit markets. GOP opponents called it another unwise bank bailout.

A measure creating the fund overcame a Republican filibuster in the Senate Thursday evening by a 60-37 vote with two Republicans joining Democrats in support of the fund.

The measure, supported by President Barack Obama, will be added to a bill providing a series of tax breaks aimed at small businesses, which could come up for a vote in the Senate next week. The House passed a bill establishing a similar lending fund in June.

The money would be available to banks with less than $10 billion in assets.
