Notes: Indianapolis Industrial Real Estate Market Eyes Upcoming Vacancies

Strong leasing activity in the first half of the year has buoyed the industrial real estate market in the Indianapolis area, but caution is the watchword as more space will become available in the second half of the year.

About 2.5 million square feet of industrial space is expected to hit the market between now and the end of the year, according to mid-year reports from CB Richard Ellis, Summit Realty Group and NAI Olympia Partners. Most of that is due to companies vacating space in Plainfield in the region’s southwest submarket.

Other tenants vacating space moved or consolidated within the Indianapolis market. Cantrell Logistics, for example, moved from Park 100 to Mount Comfort Commercial Park in Greenfield.

Fastenal left one location in the northwest submarket but expanded its facility on Guion Road by adding a new warehouse and automated retrieval system.

Gary/Chicago International has selected Aecom Technology Corp. to oversee its $90 million expansion project.

The city of Kokomo has broken ground on a new $2 million fire station.

The City of Delphi is batting around possible uses for a soon-to-be-vacant National Guard armory.

In order to deter robbers, a Fort Wayne retailer will no longer accept cash.

Columbia City Company Grows Through Acquisition

Breyden Products, Inc. announced today that the company has acquired the Electronics Division of Pennsylvania-based Gudebrod, Inc., which will be incorporated into Breyden Products’ Columbia City operations.

Bookings Flow Into JW Marriott in Indianapolis

With just under six months to go until its opening on February 4, 2011, the JW Marriott- Indianapolis Downtown has reached another noteworthy milestone. The new hotel, which will be the largest JW Marriott in the world, has booked 100,000 room nights for 2011.

Combined the two companies represent more than $200 million in annual revenues, and operate 45 branch offices in 10 states—Alabama, Georgia, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Nevada, Ohio, Tennessee, and Texas.

Notes: 1,000 Temporary Employees Sought in Terre Haute

Employment Plus in Terre Haute is looking for 1,000 temporary employees.

In an announcement issued this week, the company states it has 1,000 temporary positions to fill in the third and fourth quarters of 2010, with most of them lasting into the first quarter of 2011. Work should begin the first week of September.

Fegan said Employment Plus has clients in the Terre Haute area that will be ramping up production this fall in their “distributing and packaging” and “light industrial” divisions. Wages for the positions range from $9 to $10.50 an hour and will be available in full- and part-time shifts.

Between 60 and 70 percent of the positions are for one employer, while the remainder are split among another three, he said, adding that he cannot disclose the names of the clients.

The city of Kokomo has recalled the last of a dozen firefighters laid off last April.

Nationally, workplace fatalities fell 17% in 2009 primarily due to lower employment in the construction industry. In Indiana, deaths on the job declined 14%.

Greensburg Company to Double Workforce by 2012

Bluewater Thermal Solutions, a provider of engineered thermal solutions, including heat treating, brazing and assembly, will expand its manufacturing facility in Greensburg, creating up to 15 new jobs by 2012.

The company which provides thermal treatments and solutions for various materials including steel, aluminum and non metallic’s while serving customers in the automotive, aerospace, energy, construction, agriculture and transportation industries, will invest more than $2.2 million to expand service offerings at its Greensburg facility.

Indianapolis Gets Money for Infrastructure Improvements

Indianapolis has received $153.8 million to invest in capital improvement projects through the City’s RebuildIndy program. These funds are the first set of funds unlocked by Mayor Greg Ballard’s efforts to streamline the City’s utilities. The funds will be invested to improve roads, bridges, and sidewalks throughout Indianapolis.

“This incredible investment to improve our city is just the beginning,” said Mayor Ballard. “With the City-County Council’s approval of transfer of the water and wastewater systems to Citizens Energy Group, we expect to secure another several hundred million in early 2011. Addressing our infrastructure needs, without tax increases, will further Indianapolis’ place as one of the most livable, sustainable cities in the Midwest.”
