Notes: State Seeks More Air Cargo Business

Indiana is trying to attract more air cargo traffic.

State Sen. Tom Wyss, R-Fort Wayne, introduced a bill in the Indiana General Assembly that would have provided a 50 percent tax credit to companies investing in transportation or logistics operations.

The bill was stripped of most of its funding in the Senate because of budget concerns, but Wyss said he hopes some month will be restored in the House after Democrats end a month-long boycott.

Bart Giesler, executive director of the Aviation Association of Indiana, said Indiana is an ideal spot for a freight hub.

“Chicago is just a bottleneck, whether it’s at the airport or all the congestion on the roads,” Giesler said. “We think if you land in Indiana you can bypass all that and lower the distribution costs.”

Unemployment Rate Falls in February

Indiana’s preliminary seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate dropped 0.3 percent, to 8.8 percent in February. This marks the first time since December 2008 the state’s unemployment rate has been less than 9 percent.

Indiana’s rate is now just below the national average of 8.9 percent and below that of all neighboring states. Private sector employment in Indiana declined in February (-1,600).

“The number of Hoosiers claiming state unemployment insurance benefits is less than half the number it was two years ago,” said Mark W. Everson, Commissioner of the Department of Workforce Development. “Moreover, new claims for unemployment insurance are now at a level not seen since 2006.”

Brechbuhler Scales to Open Third Indiana Location

Construction has begun on a new build-to-suit at AmeriPlex Indianapolis for Ohio-based Brechbuler Scales, Inc. Holladay Construction Group has been hired to build the project, a new 12,000 square foot building designed by Holladay Properties.

Brechbuhler Scales, a scale service provider and distributor of light and heavy capacity scales, purchased land at AmeriPlex to open a new scale service branch location, the third such operation in Indiana. The branch will offer scale sales, full scale testing and service, manned and unmanned scale systems and scale rentals. The company hired Holladay Construction Group as the Construction Manager and Holladay Properties is acting at the architect for the project.

“It’s an exciting project to be working on. I think that we (Holladay Properties) and Holladay Construction Group have worked well together, integrating the design/build component and the turn key development of the project,” Mike Long, Project Designer for Holladay Properties, said. “This is also a new venue for us with the pre-engineered product that allows these smaller BTS projects at AmeriPlex to fit into tight budgets.”

The facility will be constructed using a pre-engineered system by Robertson Building Systems, a leading provider of steel building systems and steel building components. Pre-engineered building systems are an economical and environmentally conscious building choice; a standard Holladay strives for in all of its developments and a quality that attracted Brechbuler Scales. The pre-engineered system offers energy efficiency and low maintenance costs as well.

According to Brechbuler Scales, the new branch will offer over 30 other manufacturer scale options from balances, force measurement, light capacity to heavy capacity scales and include a full line of scale testing, calibration and certification services. The new facility is expected to open when construction is completed in September of 2011.
